Roof Rack Mishaps
Roof Rack Mishaps
Have you ever had the unfortunate experience of driving into your garage with your roof rack on and not quite making it inside? It can be a devastating experience. I know from the faces and voices of those who call or come into the store hoping it can be fixed before their significant other finds out. Mistakes happen. We are all busy and sometimes things just slip of our minds. Maybe it was the lid of your Thule box or maybe it was your shiny new mountain bike but 10 out of 10 times the garage door wins and whatever is on your roof loses.
Here are a few videos of some people who have made the same mistake, some even twice. Hopefully they make you laugh, not at them but with them, in solidarity, for those who have done the same in the past all share the pain.
Video #1 – Lucky for this guy he had a soft roof box but he made a bad decision, twice.
Video #2 – Speaking of soft cargo bags, you may want to make sure you tie them down really well or else a big semi truck will run all your stuff over.
Video #3 – This fella was trying to install his trunk bike rack. He thought he was successful until he slammed his trunk closed. He is dumbfounded by what happens next.
Video #4 – This video isn’t really a mistake, other than that storing food inside a cargo box might attract some big, hungry, furry friends. Whoever filming this one is way closer than I would ever be!
Don't want to end up driving into your garage door with your Thule box or shiny new road bike on top of your car? Here are a few things you can do to remind yourself that you have a load on top of your vehicle.
- A great idea to prevent you from pulling into your garage with a high load is to tie something to the bottom of your garage door that you will see as the garage door comes up and it will remind you to leave the car parked on the driveway!
- The HeadsUp System is a cool wirelss gear alert system that that mounts to the wall of your garage and detects when you arrive.
- Grab an app such as Roof Rack Ranger which can notify you before you drive into your garage or parkade with a load on top of your vehicle.
- You can also purchase a low profile box such as the Inno Shadow 15 or the Inno LowDown Cruiser which depending on how much space you have between your roof rack and your garage door may prevent these catastrophic incidents from happening.
