Key Similarities

Vertical Carrying Orientation

Both the Yakima HangTight and the Yakima HangOver bike racks utilize a vertical orientation which allows you to carry more bikes in less space. Both bike racks tilt down so you can easily access the rear of the vehicle.

4 and 6 Bike Version Available

Both the Yakima HangTight and Yakima HangOver, in both 4 and 6 bike versions, can only be mounted into a 2" hitch.

Vehicle Attachment Mechanisms

Both the Yakima HangTight and the Yakima HangOver fasten to the vehicle using a threaded hitch pin. Using a threaded pin prevents the rack from wobbling in the hitch, just remember to use the included wrench to tighten up the bolt!

Lock-ability

Both the Yakima HangTight and the Yakima HangOver lock to the vehicle with a HitchLock, ensuring someone cannot easily remove the bike rack. Neither bike rack comes with an integrated lock for the bikes. However, both bike racks include a lock loop which you can run your own cable lock through to secure the bikes onto your rack, preventing your bikes from walking away when you make a quick stop.

Weight Capacity

Both the Yakima HangTight and the Yakima HangOver, in both 4 and 6 bike models, carry up to 37.5 pounds per bike.

Key Differences

The most important difference between the Yakima HangTight and the Yakima HangOver is how the bikes are fastened to the bike rack.

On the Yakima HangTight, the bikes are fastened to the bike rack via their handlebars. Therefore, the bikes tires face away from the vehicle on the Yakima HangTight.

On the Yakima HangOver, the bikes are fastened to the bike rack via their front forks. Therefore, the bikes tires face towards the vehicle on the Yakima HangOver.

Range of Bike Fitment

Due to the cradle design, the Yakima HangOver can only carry bikes with a front suspension fork. The Yakima HangOver WILL NOT WORK with rigid forks on hybrid, road, cruiser, or kids bikes.

The Yakima HangTight 6 carries up to 6 flat bar bikes or 4 drop bar bikes. The Yakima HangTight 4 carries up to 4 flat bar bikes or 3 drop bar bikes. The Yakima HangTight supports most road, mountain, kids, and cruiser bikes by the handle bar. Furthermore, the fully padded cradles protect your handlebars, including carbon bars. Dual-crown fork bikes may also be mounted onto this bike rack with the HandTight DH Cradle accessory (sold separately). However, the Yakima HangTight IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH aero handlebars, clip-on aero bars, or handlebars larger than 35mm in diameter.
